The new “Move Over, Slow Down” law goes into effect Sept. 1, 2013.  This law is supposed to protected TxDOT roadside construction workers by putting TxDOT work vehicles in the same protected class as emergency response vehicles and tow trucks. Under the law, you should move out of the lane nearest to it, if possible. If you are not able to safely get out of that lane, you are required to slow down to 20 miles per hour below a posted speed limit that is over 25 miles per hour, or slow down to 5 miles per hour when the speed limit is under 25 miles per hour.  Failing to slow down and give these vehicles space could result in a $500 fine.
